Why Obama is Bad for the Bahamas PDF Print E-mail

Image You, like me, might have heard the buzz around the local bars and the local talk shows about how great it would be to have Barack Obama win the U.S. Presidency in 2008.
Each time I listen to the rhetoric I recoil and feel urged to point out the reverse racism and naïve ramblings that are contained in such discussions. Lets go down the list of why Obama is Bad for the Bahamas.

1. Obama has publicly stated over and over again in his campaign in the U.S. Democratic process that he is anti-offshore tax havens. In fact he has pledged the following: Obama proposes funding the tax cuts by closing corporate loopholes, cracking down on international tax havens and increasing the dividend-and-capital-gains tax for the wealthy (source: http://edition.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS). So lets break it down. The Bahamas, and other Caribbean countries like Cayman islands, Barbados, Bermuda and others who cater to off shore banking are squarely in the cross hairs of Obama’s crack pot scheme to tax the rich and help the poor in the U.S.

2. Obama appears to be protectionist. What that means is that he is pro-protectionism and anti-global free trade. Look at his strong rhetoric against NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) and about how Americans should spend their money at home and keep jobs in America. His speech hints at his inexperience and lack of economic reality. Can someone please sit this guy down and explain to him the economic facts of comparative advantage. Listen the U.S. is all powerful, but it cannot survive on its own by focusing inward. Some things will always be more economic to be produced else where, like many of the goods currently being made in Asia and Oil for example that comes out of the Middle East.

3. Obama does have some good ideas that really give some hope that he offers a chance for a different type of politics in Washington. Maybe he won’t be as war hungry as Bush was, or Mccain may be. I hope that Iraq taught the Cowboys in Washington that they can’t just bomb anyone into submission. However maybe Obama is just too different.

Overall Obama is overall bad for the Bahamas, and each Bahamian should consider very carefully his policies and what he stands for before they decide to be so supportive of Obama and his campaign. Plus 99% of us can’t vote in the U.S. elections anyway. And for goodness sake, please don’t support a man to win an election just because of his skin color! Remember Brent Symonette and the issues that came up in the 2007 elections???
