According to a Freeport News report, of the 755 prospective 2008 graduates from 10 high schools on Grand Bahama island, 87 students completed their school careers with "certificates of attendance" as the only souvenirs of their years spent in school.
Lets think for a second on how this translate into the students without a diploma being able to start support themselves financially. As they apply for jobs, they compete against those that have a diploma and maybe a college education.

It seems that this translates into the student staying at home with the parents, working odd jobs here or there and for males, maybe a construction handy man type job.

Adults please educate your children on the realities of life. Get them to focus on the value of an education and less on the materialistic aspect of what they can wear to "wear your own clothes days" at school.

Former Principal of St. Georges Secondary School Kenneth Romer attributes this phenomenon to students placing very little value on education.

"We've become very materialistic as a country," Romer said. "Education is just no longer valuable to some parents or to students."

According to Romer, students view education as more of "a luxury as opposed to being a necessity."

With the largest student population on Grand Bahama, 25 of St. Georges 187 twelfth graders did not meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 to receive a diploma.
